Congrats!! My town we use to have Khmer interpreters until all moved out to other cities. It sucks that I have to do that job for my mom "all the time".

Congrats!!! Medical terms in Khmer are pretty difficult. I remember this one time my grandfather and his friend were talking and they said "​​​ទឹកនោមផ្អែម-duk noum pa-em." So I'm sitting there trying to figure out what the heck they are talking about. I finally gave up and asked my dad what it meant. Literally it means sugary/sweet urine aka diabetes. How on earth would you say breast cancer? If you have time maybe you can give us some Khmer medical terminology of the day/week/month?

Breast cancer would be mo'ha re'ek dos. Thats a geat idea med term in khmer

Congrats! Why does your mom make fun of you? lol. I assumed you spoke it fluently cuz didn't you come to the states when you were a teenager? I get made fun of too...and it doesn't help when they don't put enough effort into trying to understand my mispronunciations. discourages me from speaking it. Have fun with your job!

chais, she is in the final stage of cheomotherapy and the doctor said she will be more than likely to recover from the illness. and i always try to help out whenever I can especially with khmer ppl. Sunnie, thanks. I was hella scared cuz i had never done anything like this before, almost the exact same feeling as jumping from the plane Rosy, when I use the wrong words I get laughed at. I dont mind cuz I always use it as a tool to make my speech better. It may seem crazy but Im more motivated when presented with negatives lol

That is awesome! I envy you not only because can speak khmer better than me , but also because your job sounds amazing!...I speak broken khmer so its hard to communicate even with my parents because they speak broken english. haha Hope it all goes well!

Very lucrative field and very important in the medical field. It is the hardest thing ever when there's a language barrier between hospital staff and the patients!!!

I would love to have this as a full time gig but there just arent too many khmer who need translating. beside, what are their kids for, right? I take my parents to the doctor all the time eventhough they could pretty much communicate with very little trouble. I only translate once or twice a week on my off days/hours.

The elderly side of my family have all passed on from this life but once upon a time many years ago, they were here with us and I was a caretaker for some of them.

I had my practice even thought it was hard describing what most of anything really means in Khmer. It is tough where there isn't even a name for it in our language.

How do you say Appendex in Khmer? hah. Sometime, Nurses come to me to ask for assistance when there is a near-by Khmer patient while I was visiting my elders.

My grandma told me that I'm being paid in Good Karma points for helping out. I don't mind it anyway. Any ma I see that is Khmer, I think of her as my Ma too.

I think it's a nice job, Tidus even though it can get depressing atime.

We describe stuff as they are and not by some prefixes/suffixes. I think its easier to remember it that way. Appendix= kna'eng pu'os vean

i got a cousin who does the same you're doing, but for the courts. she makes awesome money (at least one hundred american dollars plus an hour). there is also a lot of flexibility within her work too! she can decide to work whenever she wants to! i think you're on the right track if this is something you want to do.

uni is a khmer word for vagana
loung is a khmer word for penis.

Those are the only two words you need to know.

I remember I had to do some interpreting when I was in college tutoring 4th graders. My khmer wasn't the best and I had to improvise a lot just to push the "translation" through. lol There was no big khmer words that's for sure, and I can't imagine having to translate the medical terms into khmer like you're doing. It sounds hard just thinking about it. Good luck!
