my family will kill me if i go to the temple looking like that. as you can see my little sister isn't that old but she can't be excuse from not wearing the traditional clothes to the temple. because i had to go back to campus in time for my soccer game, I had to change into my jeans and tshirt. I did the "srong preah" in jean and t-shirt and my family was already unhappy lol but they allowed it due to circumstance

Im very pleased to see that across the world cambodians still honor the old customs and traditions of our ancestors. I will be going to the temple also next weekend to honor my family and ancestors. And also to wish my brother a safe return from the front lines. He has been gone since november and i miss him dearly. Now is the time to give thanks to our ancestors and pray for a blessed year.

Agree! It's the same way over here as well. Too many girls going to the temple just to show off. Not to mention the endless amount of gossip and drama, I just stopped going. It's no longer a celebration of our culture, but just a sell out party. But I'm glad some people didn't forget the point of New Year

it was like that at the temple that i went. you see girls who wear clothes like they were going clubbing. I'm surprise everytime, because their parents actually allowed them to go to the temple like that. I enjoy going to the temple because i get to see alot of khmer people and it remind me of home..I love being with my family and get blessing from the elders

Wow. This is totally different than the Khmer New Years in San Diego. There's actually more khmer people than nonkhmers there. In fact, I don't even see a single nonKHMER in any of those pictures.

This actually looks like a real Khmer New Years party.

This is so pure and so authentic - it's exactly what it's suppose to be like. Over here in San Diego it was the opposite. While they were playing traditional music at the temple, there were a bunch of African black and ghetto white guys freak dancing with the Khmer girls like a bunch of sluts and baboons. What's even more worse, the Khmer parents seemed to not even care about it.

To them, as long as they have food to eat and alcohol to drink they don't care about anything else. They fail to have the foresight of the impact it has on their culture, their community and the reputation of their family.

This is the reason why I didn't show up this year. I didn't go to the temple, nor to any dance party. I was simply ashamed and disappointed by what's been going on over the past couple years. It seems like it gets worse and worse every year.

Don't let this kind of thing happen to you guys. Protect your daughters, your sisters and family members from lurking predators . Enemies are everywhere, just like what your forefathers went through in Cambodia. Only difference is, they're attacking from all sides.

it's not a khmer new year party. that is the wrong term to use it. whether or not there are white/black /latino show up to the temple, that won't stop me from going because i'm going for my religion and culture. Them being there is their businesses. As long as they don't cause any trouble for other people, by all mean they are welcome to observe our culture.

We can't always blame other races, we also have to look at our behaviors. Did we somehow gave them signs that it's ok to drink and acting like crazy fools at the temple? We have to show them that the temple is a peaceful place, a sanctuary where you can rest you mind. Take church for example, you don't see people wearing clubbing outfits to the church nor do you see people walking into the church will alcohol in their hands. They built an image of what you should look like when you go to church and how you should behave. If you go to church in a conservative clothing and be respectful, people will follow that image. It will become a norm in society. it's a psychological thing. Some of us on the other hand, built a different image for our temple and our society. As crazy as I am, I become a totally different person when i set foot into the temple. I'm a fun loving, independent, and very talkative person but once i set foot into the temple. I become a quiet and a conservative girl. You might think it's bad that i'm faking it but i'm not. I just know when to bring out my conservative side some people on the other hand don't know how to do it.

The temple that I went to, there were white people, but they are very respectful of our culture.
