Anniversary: 1940's Theme

I've been doing a lot of research on the 1940's because this will be my party theme, and so far I kinda have the idea on the food (may need some help from you Foodies and history majors) as the food theme is inspired by World War II. East meets West, North meets South, pretty much a fusion of the cuisines of the countries involved, so instead of the world clashing, I will bring the world together and nothing brings people together better than food, right? So far I have "Luau in New York", that's my East meets far West...Hawaii did play a big part of this because I will be using Pearl onions, to rep Pearl Harbor, and pineapples are the best known tropical fruits of Hawaii, and we will be using cuts of New York steaks all skewed in together with a spicy kick that will "explode" in your mouth. For dessert, I love the idea of Jewish "black and white" cookies layered inside or atop of German chocolate cake served in a martini glass. Quiche tarts filled with some meat popular in one of the Axis or Allies of WWII, this one will be called, Quiche La Reine instead of the traditional Quiche Lorraine. My parents will contribute by making sphagetti with Chinese ingredients, so Italy and China will be knocked out off the list. So if anyone can come up with other food ideas, that would be great...

Onto decoration... 1940's was best known for nightclubs with gambling, big bands, cigar rooms, and dancing. The venue I got is pretty underground as it used to be a warehouse and recently turned into an underground nightclub venue and the outside is made of bricks. I'm thinking of having a billiard (pool table) in a private room for the gamblers, and next to it will be a lounge set with black leather sofa as a cigar room and it's next to the bar. I will provide some pics next week with an updated blog for anyone who has ideas. As for drinks, I'm not sure what was the most popular drinks back then, should I go with that or just have my own personal favorites (which isn't much since I'm not much of a drinker), I will definitely have whiskey for heavy drinkers, but limited. I don't want to spend so much since alcohol and food will take up most of the budget, but I do want to set the tone of the era. Hopefully everyone that was invited and attending will come dressed accordingly, fedoras for the fellas, and red lipstick for the ladies...not so much to ask for.

Entertainment... Ok, I hope my fellow friends are pretty open minded as far as music goes, but the arrival music will be nothing but Big Band era music like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, The Andrews Sisters, and definitely Frank Sinatra...popular of the 40's, and other orchestra bands/singers. My biggest anticipation would be my friends live performance, I pray to God she doesn't get sick or cancel last minute, I wouldn't be able to scrape up enough money to hire Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey, or someone of her caliber....holy cow she is talented and will be singing...."La Vie En Rose", but it won't be all 1940's music...when the party starts pumpin and everyone lets loose after my ceremony, we will be playing top 40's (no pun intended...haha), and a few line dancing! I'm excited, but at the same time nervous....it's 2 months away and I still have no clue what I want to wear. It's like throwing a wedding all over again, huy!!!! The stress!!! Input is more than welcome....

sounds awesome. wish I could be there. I've never attended any themed event. Is your anniversary exactly on the 28th, or was that just the closest convenient date for it?

it's the closest convenient date for us. We'd like to hold the event the following Saturday, but there's already an event held there every other Saturdays, and the 28th just so happens to be closest, I'd rather celebrate before hand than after. I just came up with another fabulous food idea and its PERFECT. American/Japanese rivalry in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii coming together in harmony and peace as a Teriyaki Slider on Hawaiin roll. Clever, huh...nothing more American than a burger and Japanese are known for teriyakis! And as far as drinks... I want to serve what was most popular like Manhattan cocktail or the Hurricane which was started in New Orleans, there was a shortage on liquor during the depression, but rum was a surplus...so New Orleans came up with the Hurricane which was a concoction of Rum and passion fruit juice. Thinking about doing Bloody Mary, but calling it "Bloody Queen Mary" since the Queen Mary served in World War II and a great way to pay tribute to I guess a landmark of Long Beach, my hometown.

I read that it was one of the allies, along with other countries. Japan, Italy, and Germany were the Axis.

China was in ruins during that time and was mostly occupied by Japan. But yes the U.S. was supplying the Chinese with weapons in hopes that the Chinese would help their cause, but they did very little, which force the U.S. to drop the nuke.

China played a critical role in tying down many Japanese Army troops, making them unavailable to defend against the American advances in the Pacific War. But this blog is about food, and obviously...little or a lot, China had a part of it, so I will definitely include them in on the dishes. Just wondering how I will incorporate Russian or Poland into this...wait....Polish sausages in my quiche...yes, that will do it! (lol, just realized that didn't sound so lady like..."polish sausages in my quiche", hahahaha! Hey, like I said...whatever makes people...come together!!!

your ideas are pretty cool. I don't know much about the 1940s nor the history of cuisines so I won't be of much help here. I do kinda like the fashion and music from that decade however.

Thanks Rosy, the 40's had a lot of A line or wrap dresses, and buttons are keys, around mid 40's, the look of womens suits were very military...and this is probably why I love Christian Dior so much, his designs reigned during that decade, structured tailored suits without compromising with femininity and glamour. 40's was a great combination of the 20's and 30's together. Suriya, I will definitely have potatoes as it is one of my favorite ingredients, it will most likely be in my quiche.
